Ranked on Google, invisible in ChatGPT: what changed

You did the work. You ranked. Search for your service in your town and there you are, near the top of Google. So why is the phone quieter than it should be? Part of the answer is that the front of Google has quietly changed, and part is that a whole second search is happening somewhere you cannot see.

Two things are pulling attention away from the classic blue links. First, Google now often answers the question itself, at the top, with an AI summary that names a few businesses before you ever reach the ranked list. Second, a growing number of people skip Google entirely and ask an assistant. In both cases, the winner is not whoever ranked highest. It is whoever the AI decided to name.

Ranking and recommendation are different jobs

Ranking rewards a page that matches a search. Recommendation rewards a business the assistant trusts enough to put its own credibility behind. Those overlap, but they are not the same. A page can rank on keywords and still give an assistant nothing solid to stand on: no clear service area, no readable proof, no consistent identity across the web. So the assistant reaches past it to a business that is easier to vouch for.

What closes the gap

The fixes are not exotic. They are the unglamorous fundamentals that most sites skip because they do not show up in a pretty mockup.

If you are ranked but the calls are thin, do not assume the answer is more of the same. The gap is usually not your ranking. It is that the AI layer sitting on top of search cannot yet confidently recommend you. Close that, and you stop losing the customers who never scroll to the blue links at all.
